EXPERIENCES SELL – JUST ASK ALS

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has gone viral and is sweeping the country and the world by storm.  Actors, athletes, journalists and people of all professions are pouring buckets with cold water and ice over their heads.  And they love it!!!

Ice Bucket ALS ChallengeIt all started when friends of Boston College Baseball Captain Pete Frates, who is suffering from ALS, asked their friends and family to pour ice water over them to create awareness for ALS.

The challenge is if you do pour the ice-cold water over yourself, you then have the experience and right to challenge your friends, colleagues and family. You get to call people out by name.  How fun is that?

If you do not pour ice-cold the water over yourself, then you have to give a donation. Funny thing is people are doing both. The ALS Association is claiming that their donations are up a staggering 6000%.

And so is the awareness for this awful disease.  To gain this much notoriety how much do you think ALS would have had to pay in advertising fees?  I am not sure that even a $100 Million in fees would have even generated half of the attention they have already received.  And they got this notoriety for free!

So what’s the lesson here?  People buy experiences!  If you create an experience that is fun, engaging, challenging and something everyone can do, then you will find your sales skyrocketing.  Just ask ALS!
